The Joy of Collecting: The Heart of a Vintage Lover

A vintage lover is sentimental. A vintage lover is frugal. A vintage lover is not wasteful.

Do any of these statements apply to you? I know they can all be said about me. I am the queen of saving everything AND loving everything from the past. Even the things that don’t fit my style.

Are you the same way?

I love everything from mid-century modern to Victorian and beyond. My house is a mash-up of all of those things. Maybe one day I’ll post photos of the rooms in my house but that day hasn’t come yet! I am sooooo not ready for that!

But I can share with you little snippets along the way.

I think one of the reasons the vintage community is bonded together so tightly is the deep-rooted love and appreciation we have for old things. We get it. It’s not about being materialistic. It’s about love.

The Joy of Collecting

Think about it. What makes you want to spend hours sorting through the shelves at a thrift store or antique mall? It’s not about finding something of monetary value. It’s about finding an item that was treasured by those who are not with us anymore. It could be that you are searching for the same mixing bowl your grandmother used. Or the book your mom used to read to you at bedtime. It’s a way of being connected to our ancestors.

Sometimes it’s not even about our own family history or memories. It can be about preserving what was once important to someone we never even met. In times before us, people only owned the items they used and loved. There weren’t a lot of extra items just taking up space. What they had was important to their daily lives. It should never end up in a landfill.

Is my sentimentality showing yet?

I thought so. But I also know you understand. That’s why we connected. Because you feel the same way. And isn’t it a great way to be?

Please don’t ever change :)

XOXO,

Anna Kat
